Patients with migraines have a very sensitive headache center. So lights, perfume, foods, genetic predisposition, and other effects set them off. The migraine center releases chemicals (serotonin, histamine, etc.) that cause dilatation of blood vessels in their head and severe pain results. Many patients have a primary migraine, but can end up with a chronic headache from the medications they are taking (rebound headache).
Pain: Can be in the face, head neck. It’s throbbing and can cause nausea and vomiting/sensitivity to lights/noises.
Treatment options: There are several medications available (preventative and abortive—can give you a list). Also, psychological treatments, biofeedback, and relaxation techniques are often very effective. There are a lot of holistic treatments: chiropractic, acupuncture, botox, and trigger point therapy. Sometimes rhizotomies help migraines because often people who have migraines have arthritic facet joint in their neck triggering their migraines. Our practice has used spinal cord stimulators that can work very well for patients with no other options.
